Before the Spanish conquest, these lands were inhabited by the Comechingon Indians. Interesting expressions of their culture can be found nearby the countryhouse, such as rock mortars carved in the eaves of the buildings that served them as homes or shelters and cave paintings in sacred natural caves.
Later, these lands went into the Jesuit order’s possession. During that
period, Puesto Viejo was –as indicated by its name, Old Post–
a post that lay within the Potrero de los Avalos field. This in turn was part
of the Santa Catalina farming estate, which has been declared a World Heritage
Site by the UNESCO.
The people that lived here were responsible for the cattle that grazed in this section of the vast farming estate, to which they were linked through a branch of the Camino Real. This road also led to other posts, so that the jesuits and the local people that traveled around were able to stop at Puesto Viejo to rest and regain strength.
With time, the area covered by the Potrero
de los Avalos was subsequently divided due to inheritances and sales. Today,
Puesto Viejo belongs to Virginia Brunet and Vicente Peluffo, who out of fondness
for these lands decided to open their gates to fortunate tourists and guests.
